Welcome to Mechanix Nix

Sun Oct 25 2026

Welcome! I'm Amelia, I'm the person behind this project.

In case you don't know yet, Mechanix OS is the shell and apps that run on top of Fedora in the official OS for the Mecha Comet.

I have preordered a Mecha Comet, and I'm excited to get it. But I would rather run NixOS on it.
Mecha's approach to other flavours of Mechanix OS besides Fedora is to let the community make them themselves. So I decided to take on the challenge of making a NixOS flavour of Mechanix OS.

I started around summer of 2025 by writing Nix packages for the Mechanix apps, and later for the shell too.
Since then, Mecha has rewritten the Mechanix shell and apps at least a couple times, but I have followed and updated my Nix expressions accordingly.

I have also built bootable NixOS images through Nixpkgs's make-disk-image.nix which come with the Mechanix shell and apps configured. It ultimately aims to provide an experience identical to that of the official Mechanix OS, but under NixOS.

As of this writing, Mecha is rewriting the Mechanix shell and apps for the (hopefully) last time before the Mecha Comet's release.
